Graece βερβερὶ, priscum nomen conchae margarniferae, quod ad Indorum linguam pertinere vult Androsthenes.
Bochartus Phoenicum potius vocabulum esse credit harar enim limguâ hâc clarum, purum, nitidum esse significat: quod conchae margaritiferae maxime convenit, quae nitore, claritate et puritate reliquas, in interna maxime parte, longe superat. Sic quia μαἱρειν et μαράγδος, splendere est et μαρμαρυγὴ splendor; utμάρμαρον et μαράγδος, vel cum prosthesi σμαράγδος, ita etiam μαργαρίτης, nonnulli dictum volunt. Certe Nonnus l. 34. margaritam λίθον appellat ἅλμης μαρμαρέην, lucidum maris lapidem: et Arabice lala et darra, lucere est, unde lulu et dorra; quorum illud margaritam in genere, hoc unionem notat.
